I have been painting in watercolour for about 20 years. I learned as much as I could from instructional books by Alwyn Crawshaw, John Blockley and Philip Jamieson in particular. Of the pioneers, JS Cotman, John Middleton and Thomas Girtin are my heroes. It sounds corny, but I learned a lot by going round a Cotman exhibition in London and doing small copy sketches of his compositions in pencil .

For a time I was a member of the Bath Society of Artists. Apparently Pissarro was a member of said organisation, so I felt a bit chuffed. I was only invited to become a full member however after one of my paintings shown in the annual exhibition was the only one in the whole show to be reproduced in the local paper's review!

Pencil and charcoal sketches are useful for very quick notes, and for keeping in practice

In the last five years I have "moved up" to oil painting. I have always painted quickly in "plein air" style, and I have had to adapt my watercolour technique to work at a similar fast speed in oils. Generally I try and get as much done as I can on site in about an hour or so, and then finish at my liesure in the studio
