I have been painting in watercolour for about 20 years. I learned as much as I could from instructional books by Alwyn Crawshaw, John Blockley and Philip Jamieson in particular. Of the pioneers, JS Cotman, John Middleton and Thomas Girtin are my heroes. It sounds corny, but I learned a lot by going round a Cotman exhibition in London and doing small copy sketches of his compositions in pencil . |

For a time I was a member of the Bath Society of Artists. Apparently Pissarro was a member of said organisation, so I felt a bit chuffed. I was only invited to become a full member however after one of my paintings shown in the annual exhibition was the only one in the whole show to be reproduced in the local paper's review!
Pencil and charcoal sketches are useful for very quick notes, and for keeping in practice
