Description

Painting (all images copyright noel garner)

Watercolour. Rolvenden, Sussex.
Watercolour. Strumpshaw Fen outside Norwich. Bird hide on right
Watercolour. Ashton (?) Somerset. My wife Judy and the boys when they were little, so must be 20 years ago
Watercolour. Wilbraham just east of Cambridge
Watercolour. Stevington mill, Bedfordshire
Watercolour. Denver Mill , Norfolk
Watercolour. Horsey mill, The Broads, Norfolk
Watercolour, Bardwell, Suffolkl. Painted not long before high gales got behind the cap and toppled it. Appparently just missed the Miller's cottage
Watercolour. Herringfleet drainage pump, the Broads. Apparently a watchman would live in this small pump when the weather was bad, because the only method of controlling the speed was to brake and then furl the cloth sails. If the speed was too great, the brake wouldn't hold the sails. Inside you can see a small fireplace where he would keep warm
Watercolour. On the R Thurne I think, The Broads. Or maybe R Ant
Watercolour. The Broads
Watercolour. Near Bury St. Edmunds
Watercolour. On the R Thurne. Beautiful setting for this wind pump.
Watercolour. Can't remember. Looks like one in Cottenham, but it hasn't got a water tank on top
Watercolour. Billingford Mill, Norfolk
Watercolour. Watchfield, Somerset
Watercolour. Polegate Mill, Surrey (or Kent?)
Watercolour. Burnham Overy Staithe. I drove past this mill only recently. Owned by the National Trust - you can stay here. North Norfolk coast.
Watercolour. Cann Mills, Shaftesbury. Amazing mill, modelled on the Greeek mills in Mykanos (which I have also painted, if I can find it). I don't often scratch out, but the ripple of wind on the pond was the place to do it

Watercolour. Over mill , Cambridgeshire. In working order. The Miller produces nice flour which we buy whenever we are over his way. I have some video inside that I'll post in due course.
Watercolour. Belloc's mill, named after it's once owner, writer Hillaire Belloc
Watercolour. Sutton Mill, Norfolk. One of the tallest tower mills in the country .
Watercolour. Great Chishill mill, Cambs. Trying to get an interesting viewpoint. Better version is lower down, at dusk.
Watercolour. Somewhere near Bath
Watercolour. High Ham, Somerset. Pretty derelict when we went to see it. We still have some plants from seeds in that garden.
Watercolour. Broadfield Mill, Felton Common, Bristol. Close to the airport if I remember rightly. The water was freezing on the paper, not drying. If you let the water evaporate in the cold, without letting it melt, you retain an interesting granulated effect, just visible here. Same effect can be seen in my watercolour of Impington Mill further down this page.
Watercolour. Rye. In complete contrast, hot and summery.
Watercolour. High Ham Somerset again.
Watercolour. Wicken Fen drainage pump, Wicken Fen nature reserve, Cambs. This was brought here from ? and reassembled on the reserve.
Watercolour. Remains of mill overlooking Western super Mare. Quick 10 minute sketch
Watercolour. Near Bristol
Watercolour. Terling smock mill. The original is scarcely bigger than t his reproduction
Watercolour. Stocks Mill, Wittersham, Sussex
Watercolour. Meopham, Kent I think
Watercolour. St. Benet's the Broads. Famously and awesomely painted by the great John Sell Cotman - my favourite watercolour painter
Watercolour. Great Chishill post Mill

Watercolour. Impington Mill. I have just revisited this mill, because the new owner, Steve, has just re-built the stocks and sails. I had the privilege of seeing the whole thing in action (23rd September 07) on the first windy day after the last sail had been put up. What a marvellous site.

When I painted this it ws freezing cold. The lady of the house brought me out a mug of tea. I was so absorbed, however, that when I turned to drink it the mug had disappeared into the snow!. The trees in the foreground (15 years later) now obscure this view.

Oil pastel. Mmm... where is this. Not far from Saffron Walden. A breezy day - perfect for painting a windmill
Watercolour. Great Gransden Mill Cambs. The first windmill painting I ever did. I found it so difficult to get the sails right I went out and got lots of books on mills out of the library. I've been hooked on windmills and windpumps ever since
Watercolour. Hunsett drainage pump, The Broads (I have wrongly called it a mill on the painting) One of my favourites, and it hangs in my father-in-law's lounge
Oil pastel. Barnack Mill with "Hills and Hollows" in the foreground. The stone for Peterborough Cathedral was cut from this site. Now a nature reserve, the rare Pasque flower can be seen here at Easter time . Sometimes oil pastels are just right - this one was one such occasion.
Pencil sketch. Who knows where? Done in a hurry
Watercolour. Wicken Mill (not to be confused with the Wicken Fen punp), Cambs
Oils. Maud Foster's Mill, Boston, Lincolnshire. A chunky little painting done while I sipped a pint from the pub on the right
Watercolour. Outwood Mill. I had just dropped off my son at Heathrow early one autumn morning in 2006. I'm always looking for new viewpoints to make a windmill painting look interesting, and this plane tree was a blaze of colour.
Pencil sketch. Stanton windmill Suffolk. Owned by enthusiasts who live in the miller's house
